Most of us think abut getting our hair and nails done before vacation and packing cute outfits for all the pics we’ll take to capture getaway memories, but there are some practical things many of us overlook that are far more important to pack than another pair of shoes and that cute maxi dress.
If you’re preparing to go abroad for more than a quick trip to a tourist resort, do yourself a favor and pack these five essentials. It’s easy to overlook them or assume you’ll have everything you need where you’re going, but depending on the location that can’t be assumed.
At least one bottle of water
When I traveled to Costa Rica last year, water shortages throughout the day were normal — and quite sucky when returning from the beach, a hike, or running sweaty errands all day. My only saving grace was a huge bottle of water which, thankfully, I could find at the market up the road. But I’ve been advised prior to thinking about traveling to other countries that even bottled water is sometimes scarce so you at least want to have some with you so you won’t be completely without.
Toilet Paper
Toilet paper is not guaranteed in public restrooms in other countries. Have a roll of your own or at least some wipes.
An outlet adapter
Because you will have a fit if you can’t charge your laptop, tablet, and phone daily, and you may not be able to find an adapter easily while away.
A portable charger
The last thing you want to be is without a phone when you’re in a foreign land draining your battery taking photos, googling translations, researching sites, and texting on What’s App.
Cash
In places like Cuba, American credit cards are not welcome. Plus who wants to pay ATM fees on top of top of conversion rates? Take all the cash you’ll need with you, preferably already in the currency you need.
