While we’re debating about whether or not a mother did too much by renting a camel for her son’s prom, there are other students whose parents or the students themselves are scraping and scrounging to afford the bare minimum.
Shaday Gooden Brown, a high school senior at Gage Park High School, like most girls, wants to attend her prom. Unfortunately, she didn’t have the money to pay for her dress.

Undetered though, Gooden Brown decided to set up a stand to sell chips and snow cones to raise the money.

You know what they say, God helps those who help themselves. Not long after Gooden Brown set up her stand, Quinniya Hearn saw her and decided to help her out. She went on Facebook Live and shared a post encouraging others to help Shaday.

Thankfully, with the help from kind strangers, Quiana Allen, the owner of Curve Culture Boutique, and makeup artist Janae Wesby, Gooden Brown collected enough money to buy her dress and have the prom experience she’d been imagining.

Gooden Brown told ABC 7 Chicago, “I got bullied and talked about because how dark-skinned I am and how my clothes are not up to date. When I tried on the dress, it gave me self-confidence because I don’t have too much of that. I’m not used to all the attention on me. I’m like the background person.”

Shaday and her boyfriend will be attending prom today and although the dress that she will be wearing was offered as a donation, Gooden Brown decided to use the money she raised to pay for it because she worked hard for it.
