If you haven’t already realized, less is more. Especially when it comes to your beauty routine. And who better than Miss USA winner Kára McCullough to prove it?
While pageant makeup is notoriously known for being over-the-top, McCullough’s approach to beauty is refreshingly natural. “You know I’m a minimalist. I used to use so much crap in my hair,” she told ESSENCE in a recent interview.
When she took the stage at this year’s pageant she turned heads, standing out as the only contestant who wore their natural curls instead of rocking silky smooth blowouts. But even in embracing her natural self, McCullough shared with Refinery 29 that she was initially nervous about the reaction she would get, saying,”I didn’t know if people were going to accept it…if anyone was going to be receptive to it at all.”
After taking a leap of faith that viewers and judges would celebrate her decision and winning the crown, McCullough proudly rocks her curls without hesitation. And for those curly gals out there wondering what she uses to get the perfect coils, she also revealed in her interview the products and they’re under $40.
“This Moroccan Oil Curl Defining Cream ($13, sephora.com); I love that. And I also have Chi Biosilk ($20, jcpenney.com), she continued. “And when it came to on stage presence, I always had a teasing comb or brush, to get the roots really good. And just some holding spray. That’s what really helped me keep the hair bigger, so it didn’t look like it was flat on stage.”
When it comes to makeup, McCullough shared that she’s still learning how to achieve a beat face. “I’m very hard on myself,” she continued. I’ll see these looks; especially these editorial looks and I’m like, ‘oh my gosh, I want to look like that.’
