Tyra Banks is one of the few models who has been able to make a smooth transition from the modeling industry to entertainment and business. Doing so hasn’t been an easy feat, and it’s something that has required a lot from Banks. At times, too much.
While speaking to students about branding and making the most of social media platforms, the 43-year-old said she struggled with balance for a long time, juggling multiple projects that required a lot, including America’s Next Top Model and The Tyra Banks Show.
“I was on fire,” she told USA Today. “I was so successful . .. .but I was exhausted and I was sad.”
She told the publication that she would often take on the brunt of the work that she should have handed off to her staff, including doing all of the research and prep to be ready for high-profile guests on her talk show.
“I was really going overboard,” she said. Had she not had a come to Jesus moment, Banks admitted things could have gone really bad. “I probably would have had to go to the hospital if I didn’t slow down.”
It ended up being motherhood that changed her way of doing things. Banks had to learn how to balance her responsibilities and even take time off to focus on her son, York, who is now 1.
“I definitely focused on him. I didn’t do any work at all for months.”
When she did get back to work, she started asking for and taking advantage of help being offered, including from her mother and her son’s father, Erik Asla.
“We are co-parenting and doing such a great job raising him that I don’t have to do less,” she said. “So it’s like this beautiful village around York. But I’m there every day.”
Considering all the headlines Banks has made as of late in terms of returning to her post as host of ANTM, hosting America’s Got Talent, prepping to star in and executive produce Life-Size 2 and continuing to build Tyra Beauty, it might sound like she continues to bite off more than she can chew. But she’s learned how to not allow herself to be overwhelmed and says that York has played a big role in that. “(I’m) mama in the morning, and I’m mama at night and sometimes all day when he’s with me…I don’t feel like I’m going crazy at all.”
