Stop Wishing For Couples Who You Don’t Know To Get Back Together, Like Apryl Said

Just last week my coworkers and I were discussing T.I. and Tiny’s relationship (again), but this time our disgust wasn’t about one of the rapper’s many atrocious doings or how Tiny still hasn’t seemed to be able to cut the cord. We were appalled by the constant wishes from fans of each of them that they get back together. While we’ll be the first to admit we don’t know everything that’s gone on between this pair over the past 17 years, the majority of what we do know from the past seven months alone is sad and disrespectful. And, quite frankly, we want better for Tiny. Now, after watching Apryl Jones’ live feed last night, we also gather that we should want better for her than Omarion as well.

While answering questions from her followers on Instagram Live, a few fans left comments saying Apryl and Omarion, whom she shares two children with, should get back together. And that flipped the switch for Ms. Apryl who responded as such:

“Why you asking me to get back with Omarion? What would make you tell me that? Did you know my relationship? ‘Cuz if you did, you’d probably be like, ‘run!’

“Please. I’m just saying, I need folks to stop. If someone’s not together, it’s a reason why people aren’t together. It doesn’t just happen and there’s no reason. Or, ‘hey we just separated because we separated.’ C’mon y’all let’s use some common sense.

“If I wanted to be with somebody then I’m going to be with them and if I don’t, I won’t. I’m just not in that space.”

After shouting out a fan who told her she lovers her, Apryl continued:

“As women and as human beings we have to honor ourselves. And I’m honoring myself. I rather be by myself for the rest of my f-cking life than to ever be in a relationship that’s isn’t allowing me to flourish.”

And that, ladies and gentlemen, is probably the closest we’re ever going to get to an explanation of why these two split, although the bigger point is that they did. And, like Apryl said, there’s a reason.

When it comes to celebrity couples and even everyday pairs whose lives we have no way of knowing behind closed doors, we tend to get caught up in people looking “so cute together” or having history. What we forget is all history ain’t good history and there’s a lot more to having a good relationship than looking good together. Some might even argue the more some of these couples try to push this perfect image of a relationship on us, the more messed up their situation really is.

The point is, you can never really know what’s going on between two people who are together and, as Apryl demonstrated, it can actually be quite hurtful to suggest women — and men — should stay in or return to situations that weren’t mentally or emotionally stable or fulfilling. While you may not mean any harm by throwing in your two cents, often, as an outsider, the best response is simply to look and listen. Wish the couple all the best for them and accept that that could very well mean going separate ways and that’s okay.
