If you want to make real money in the music industry, you have to produce, write and own the masters to your creations.
Thankfully, Kandi and Tiny learned this lesson early on in their musical careers.
And when their girl group Xscape disbanded, they both found ways to transition into more behind-the-scene roles in the music business.
Kandi Burruss, Tameka “Tiny” Cottle and Kevin “She’kspere” Briggs are the geniuses behind TLC’s smash hit “No Scrubs.” It certainly made them a nice chunk of change in 1999, when it spent an entire month at the top of the Billboard charts and in the top ten for 17 consecutive weeks.
And apparently, “No Scrubs” is the gift that keeps on giving.
Weeks after Ed Sheeran released his single “Shape of You,” people started drawing comparisons to “No Scrubs.” As a result, Sheeran credited Briggs, Burruss and Cottle as songwriters for the single that has been number 1 for 7 weeks.
Both Kandi and Tiny celebrated the nod.
Listen to the two songs and let us know if you hear the similarities.
Take this money, make this money.
