Ashanti-The Ghanaian Swimwear Line Fit For Queens

While nothing going on outside your window right now may suggest it’s spring, we know two things that will: the date on the calendar and Ashanti Swimwear’s spring collection.

Ashanti is a family-run, Ghanaian-owned African swimwear line whose kente prints are inspired by the Ashanti region of Ghana. And the swimwear’s designs are as unique as the method being used to bring it to the masses: crowd-funding. While the 100% swim-proof line made from high-quality 4-way stretch fabric to mold to various body shapes already comes in five sizes (XS, S, M, L, XL) and fits cup sizes A-E, the brand’s co-founders already have concrete plans to expand just nine months after the first fabrics for the line were sourced.

“This first three months (since our first fashion show in Accra) has taught us so much about our community and audience,” said 23-year-old co-founder Yasmeen who launched the brand with brother Dexter, 27. “We are definitely expanding our sizing structure to plus size and also we will be selling the tops and bottoms of bikinis separate as most people are completely different sizing up to and on the bottom.”

The brother and sister have less than three days to hit their goal of $62,000 to make those expansion dreams come true; but the products offered now will still no doubt have the masses looking like queens when they hit the beach this summer. Our own Senior Editor tried the YAA one-piece swimsuit which she called “Perfect for a hot tub with bae.”

“It fits really nicely. The material is soft and nothing rides up. While it does show a bit of skin, you’re still quite comfortable in the suit.”
