This time around, there were a few Black women serving face on the cover of the popular issue. Lupita Nyong'o, sitting pretty for her work in Queen of Katwe, Aja Naomi King, who was quite memorable (so we've heard) in Birth of Nation, Ruth Negga of Loving and Janelle Monáe, who stood out big time in both Hidden Figures and Moonlight, got cover girl status. They join actresses including Natalie Portman, Emma Stone, Amy Adams and both Dakota and Elle Fanning, who are all being lauded by the magazine for their work on the big screen this year. The beauties got the chance to shoot alone and were captured by famed photog Annie Leibovitz: You already know Lupita can't do any wrong in front of the camera. King, who is also on How to Get Away With Murder, may not have been nominated for her work in Birth of a Nation, but she looked like an award in this shot. Monáe skipped the ball gowns for her signature suit and bright lip. Her transition from music to movies has been pretty phenomenal so far. And Negga, whose had a breakout year thanks to her roles in not only Loving but also the AMC series Preacher, stood out in a striking black and white photograph. Out of all the ladies in the issue, it's Adams, Portman and Negga who are nominated for Academy Awards this year, specifically in the Best Actress category (both of Monáe's films, Moonlight and Hidden Figures, are nominated for best picture), but if the rest of the sistah included keep up the great work, they'll likely be up for their own Oscars in the next few years. Images via Vanity Fair by Annie Leibovitz
