Janelle Monae is one of four women featured on the Fresh Faces issue of Marie Claire. Not only is the issue about the outer appearance, it’s about the future being female. And going along with that theme, Monae spoke about women’s rights and how men need to get on board. And until they’re able to do so, she has an idea about what women should do in the meantime.
“People have to start respecting the vagina…Until every man is fighting for our rights, we should consider stopping having sex. I love men. But evil men? I will not tolerate that. You don’t deserve to be in my presence. If you’re going to own this world and this is how you’re going to rule this world, I am not going to contribute anymore until you change it,” she tells the mag. “We have to realize our power and our magic. Because I am all about black-girl magic, even though I’m standing with all women. But this year? This year, I am so carefree black girl.”
While Janelle’s ideals may strike some people as a bit lofty…(I mean, if we had to wait for every man to get his mind right, most of us would die without.) Still, it’s certainly a practice we could begin to implement with the individual men we attach ourselves to. If you find he doesn’t respect women, doesn’t support women’s rights issues or believe in the fight, don’t let that be a man you engage with…and not just sexually, either.
