Can you believe it has been a year since Prince passed away?
I remember that day like it was yesterday. When TMZ reported that he died, many people, including myself, didn’t believe it. But as more and more reputable publications started to share the news, my heart sank. Prince? How could Prince not be in the world? That night my friends and I made our way to the Brooklyn Bowl, a bowling alley with a huge stage and dance floor, to hear Questlove spinning the Purple One’s classics. We danced and cried and screamed out the lyrics to our favorites, from “Let’s Go Crazy” to “Anotherloverholenyohead.” It was both a great night, as well as one of great sadness.
Here we are a year later, and while trying to figure out a way to commemorate that year, I thought, what better way than to let the music play? So I ask the question: If you could only listen to five Prince songs for the rest of your life, what would they be?
Culture editor Veronica Wells, a Prince aficionado, says, “Pink Cashmere,” “Love 2 the 9s,” “Beautiful Ones,” “Nothing Compares 2 U” and “Why You Wanna Treat Me So Bad.”
Deputy editor Brande Victorian claimed some popular favorites, including “Adore, “When Doves Cry, “Kiss,” “U Got the Look” and “Purple Rain.”
And as for myself, I’m going to go with the deep cuts: “If I Was Your Girlfriend,” “Baby I’m a Star,” “Erotic City,” “The Beautiful Ones,” and “Sometimes It Snows in April.”
All of these songs we have a connection to for a variety of reasons. With that being said, what are the five Prince songs you couldn’t live without? Let us know below…
