We all get that stress isn’t good for us. Experts have said that time and time again. But did you realize that getting too stressed out could cause you to lose your teeth? Demi Moore offered herself up as an example of that when she appeared on The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon on Monday and revealed that her two front teeth are missing and she wears cosmetic replacements now.

Demi Moore Tooth loss STRESS

“I sheared off my front teeth. I’d love to say it was skateboarding or something really kind of cool, but I think it’s something that’s important to share, because I think it’s literally, probably after heart disease, one of the biggest killers in America, which is stress,” the 54-year-old said. “Stress sheared off my front tooth. But, in an effort to get ready for you, I wanted to make sure my teeth were in.”

You wouldn’t be able to tell Moore is missing any teeth because her smile seems just as bright and even as ever. However, the actress shared an image of herself at home with one of her cosmetic replacements out to show you that she’s not kidding.

She didn’t get into full detail about when and how the teeth came out, but she did say that she knocked one out as it was coming apart easily:

I know you’re probably thinking “Seriously?” But it’s true that stress can start to wear immensely on your dental health if you’re not careful.

Dr. Preston D. Miller Jr. said years ago that stress can cause us to go lax when it comes to taking good care of our teeth.

“Individuals with high stress levels tend to increase their bad habits, which can be harmful to periodontal health,” he said. He stated that people become much less attentive to oral hygiene and increase bad habits that can impact teeth.

Studies have also found that with stress can come teeth grinding and clenching. Repeatedly doing this can damage your jaw and cause your teeth to be worn thin. People do it more often than they think, as it’s often an unconscious habit or done while we sleep. Another study also found that depression and anxiety are significantly associated with tooth loss. And a study in 2012 found the stress of our romantic connections, work and parenting were strongly connected to peridontal disease.

With all that in mind, you have yet another reason to keep your stress levels in check. It’s bad enough that stress can lead to major weight loss, the loss of your hair and your mind, but your teeth too? No ma’am…
